SweetLeaf, an owner of Stevia® sweetener brand has announced on January 15, 2019, to become a national supporter of the Healthy For Good™ movement undertaken by the American Heart Association.

The Healthy For GoodTM movement encourages people across America to make fundamental and lasting changes to their lives and health by moving ahead one step at a time. SweetLeaf also announced that along with the support, the company will work with the American Heart Association to educate Americans about effects of added sugars in the daily diet. SweetLeaf will carry out an educational program through AHA’s voluntary initiatives that promote ways to live longer and healthier lives.

According to the recommendation of the American Heart Association, adults are advised to limit the daily amount of added sugar to no more than half of the daily allowance of discretionary calories. The AHA also considers diversity in person’s size and activity while limiting the amount of added sugar, for instance, for majority of American women, studies suggest that added sugar amount can be around 100 calories per day or 6 teaspoons of sugar; and for most American men the amount can be approximately 50 calories or 9 teaspoons.

Mariell Jessup, M.D., chief science and medical officer for the American Heart Association mentioned the correlation between the reduced amount of added sugars in daily food and beverage and lower risk of cardiovascular disease. He added that Healthy For Good movement will provide guidance on nutrition and new healthy recipes and help people achieve their health goals who are striving to control their intake of added sugar in improving their health and reduce the risk of overweight, obesity and type 2 diabetes.
